Overview

Source began working with Ellis in 2007 and at the time was asked to focus its attention on the pipe fixing side of the business - a difficult starter for ten on the basis that the vast majority of products in this sector are sold through plumbing wholesalers and sales are very much price driven.

After 12-months, during which the campaign highlighted everything from the all British nature of Ellis' product development and manufacturing process through to a promotion that enabled wholesalers to own brand Ellis products, we were awarded the electrical cable aspect of the business.

Since then Ellis has gone on to earn a reputation as the cable cleat expert and one of Yorkshire's leading manufacturing success stories.

Working with Ellis

At first glance you'd be forgiven for thinking Ellis is a local firm for local people. It is tucked out of sight in the picturesque village of Rillington in North Yorkshire, 75 per cent of the company's workforce lives in Rillington and its outlying villages, and it also employs nine local residents to carry out piece work in their own homes. But that's where it stops, because Ellis is global business whose products and technical expertise are world renowned.

This mix of global leader and rural business has certainly helped the PR campaign. Not only has it provided an interesting hook to get journalists to pay a visit, but it has made our job easier due to the fact we have direct access to the directors and as such have been able to be a little more controversial in the topics covered than may have been the case with a multi-national business - an approach that has created a lot of headlines and secured a huge amount of column inches in our target media.

Interesting cleat fact

If you type cable cleats into Google, one of the top image results shows a picture of Ellis MD, Richard Shaw (above).
